Our Story

The ISFCE was founded thanks to the pioneering efforts of Mr. John Mellon (1941-2018). Mr. Mellon began his journey in computer forensics in 1991, receiving early training from the International Association of Computer Investigative Specialists (IACIS). He was an active member of IACIS, serving on their Board of Directors and leading several key committees. His work was instrumental in establishing forensic standards for law enforcement across the United States and internationally.
As a lead instructor at numerous training conferences, Mr. Mellon trained hundreds of law enforcement officers and played a pivotal role in developing the IACIS Forensic Examination Standards, Code of Ethics, advanced Windows Processing Certification, and the initial Certified Forensic Computer Examiner (CFCE) problems.
After his time with IACIS, Mr. Mellon founded the International Society of Forensic Computer Examiners (ISFCE). With his extensive experience in computer forensic education and a commitment to the highest ethical standards, Mr. Mellon created a certification process that set a new benchmark in the industry. In 2003, the first Certified Computer Examiner (CCE) certification was awarded, fulfilling his vision.
Since then, ISFCE has remained a leader in the forensic industry, continuously evolving while staying true to the strong foundation built by Mr. Mellon. The organization maintained its independence until 2016, when it became part of Raytheon Cyber Solutions, Inc.

New Beginnings & New Horizons

In 2024, Raytheon Technologies divested its cybersecurity, intelligence, and services business, selling it for $1.3 billion. This division has since been rebranded as Nightwing. Shortly after, ISFCE was separated from Nightwing and taken over by Tino Kyprianou, a 20-year veteran in digital forensics and long-time ISFCE member. Now, ISFCE operates independently from its new home in New Jersey, USA.
Under Tino Kyprianou’s leadership, ISFCE is committed to expanding its training programs and enhancing the organization. Our mission is to support our members and advance the science of digital forensics. As we move forward, we are dedicated to improving our offerings and fostering the growth of digital forensics professionals worldwide.
ISFCE strives to be the leading professional society for digital forensics examiners. We are committed to maintaining the integrity and rigor of the Certified Computer Examiner (CCE) certification through regular evaluation of core competencies and testing standards. Our goal is to provide a valuable experience for our members through professional education, knowledge sharing, and networking opportunities.

Our Purpose

By focusing on these core areas, the ISFCE strives to support and enhance the professional growth and capabilities of digital forensics practitioners worldwide.
